question?
Saturday, March 14, 2009
this afternoon, my staff (st) came up to me on the shopfloor.
st: **, a customer wants to speak to a manager.
me: regarding?
st: he wants to know what is the difference between '3 for 2' and 'buy 2, get 1 free'? and i don't now how to tell him?
me: doesn't he know it's the same meaning but different words of phrasing it?
st shrugged...
i then explained.
me: '3 for 2' is buy any 3 books (show st my 3 fingers) and pay for 2 (show st my 2 fingers).
'buy 2, get 1 free' is buy any 2 books (show st my 2 fingers) and get 1 other free (show st my
3 fingers).
me: you get it? show him your fingers. if the customer still don't understand, let me know.
st smiled and went off to look for the customer.
i stood by the side and watched her explained to him.
he actually thought '3 for 2' is buy 3 books for 2 DOLLARS! buy 2 books for the price of 1!
and you wonder, people buy books to read and yet can't read simple english.
surrealist art
Wednesday, March 4, 2009
this morning my fellow manager walkie-talkie me to the back of the store to see the display shelves.
when i reached there, she was assisting a middle aged lady on an art enquiry.
she was going through the content page of a rather thick art book.
i stood aside while waiting.
the lady saw me and said to my fellow colleague, 'maybe she (refers to me) can help you.'
my colleague said: 'oh! she studied art, maybe she knows.'
this lady looked up at me and asked: 'do you know what is surrealist art?'
i paused for a second, i can feel my mind scanning through my brain; zooming to the section of art history, flipping the chapter to surrealist art.
in the midst of this second, the lady said to me: 'you studied art and don't know what is surrealist art?'
i tell you, i can hear from this question that not only ends with a ?, it also ends with a !.
my mind ran through these words 'what the
#@% do you mean by this?
the second passed.
i am awaken.
i smiled and replied: 'surrealist art. do you know dali? he does surrealist art.'
she gave me a blank look.
'who is dali?' she said.
i said: 'oh, you don't know? he was a painter and a sculpturist. his famous works are the clocks and alice in the wonderland. he has a series of works and painting on the clocks.'
she then asked: 'what kind of art is it about?'
i replied: 'his style is imaginery, a kind of flowing feeling.'
she went, ooohhh! ooohhh!
this woman, don't know what is the real surrealist art, don't come questioning me like nobody business.
she messed with the wrong person.
actually...
about a year ago my sis and i went to see dali's art exhibition at taka - opera gallery and his works were rather memorable to me + a couple of his aboved mentioned sculptures were displayed along orchard road too.
i went online afterthat to download a few of his works so it kinda 'finds its way and settle down in my mind' but got to take a bit of time to find the exact location.
and most of all, i happen to have that winy bit of interest in art history.
